In this film, Dr. McCoy (Karl Urban) makes a comment about the medical equipment on the U.S.S. Franklin being from the dark ages. This is a reference to Rotta verso la Terra (1986) when Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) visits a hospital in 1986 San Francisco, he makes the same comment about the treatment of patients.
