Derrickson says he's felt since he was a child that the real world is bigger than what he can sense around him, and that view of the world as a mystical, spiritual place is part of what drew him to this character. "I think every artist feels that way to some degree. I think every scientist feels that way to some degree, people who explore and venture into discovery, we all feel that way. I think people who don't do that for a living feel that way and need things like art and science to show them what they don't understand or to give them a sense that the world is a wondrous and magical place."
