The Hereford bull 'Nu star' was purchased for $1200 and he was carefully trained to interact with humans. Vindicator, a bull loaned by James Stewart to the production, was nominated for 1967 PATSY award. The subject of Hereford cattle had previously been treated in at least two other Westerns: The Untamed Breed (1948) and The Longhorn (1951).
