After directing La principessa e il ranocchio (2009), John Musker and Ron Clements started working on an adaptation of Terry Pratchett's "Mort", but rights problems prevented them from continuing. To avoid similar problems, they pitched three new ideas, and in 2011 they started developing this film, based on an original idea.
