In the book, Dr. Lecter's emergence from obscurity into a suspected killer arises from a lucky incidental encounter, described long after the fact by Graham to another investigator over less than two pages and well into the story. The film re-works that into a major plot point in the opening ("cold open") scenes in quite different circumstance and setting, re-casting Lecter as a hitherto-trusted forensic analyst.
