After attending the world premiere of Incantesimo dei mari del Sud (1949) in London, William Wyler at first wanted Jean Simmons to play Ann, and nearly canceled the project when an agreement with the J. Arthur Rank Organization could not be reached in time. To add insult to injury, the contract Simmons had with Rank was instead sold to Howard Hughes, who at the time owned RKO Pictures, once Wyler came back to the project.
