Jada Pinkett Smith and Sarah Michelle Gellar, two big-name actors at the time, dying rather soon in the film was meant to repeat the same tactic in the first film, where Drew Barrymore as Casey dies in the opening 12 minutes despite prominent billing. The idea was that if such well-known actors could die so early on, then anybody could die.
