Roosevelt Island, an island accessible by tram off New York City and the setting for Dark Water, is in real-life frequented by decent weather, and even serves as a mildly popular tourist attraction for the tram ride and interesting urban architecture. The reason why most of the footage shown of Roosevelt Island in the film is damp, rainy and dreary was not merely a scenic preference, though; it was intended to indicate to viewers that something supernatural was amiss on the normally sunny island; this is further communicated when the weather clears up and becomes very sunny right after Natasha's death mystery is solved and her body is taken away for a proper burial. The incessantly rainy weather brought on by Natasha was also a parallel to a particularly rainy and traumatic day for Cecilia during her Seattle childhood in the 1970's, where her alcoholic mother forgot to pick her up from school.
