Kurt Fuller originally auditioned for the role of a rude, aggressive banker called Ed Petrosius whose office randomly keeps catching fire as a side effect of mood slime and is taken to the firehouse by the Ghostbusters for monitoring (A plot-line which was eventually cut), didn't get the role, but was remembered by Ivan Reitman and subsequently offered the role of Hardemeyer.
