(at around 2h) The scene in which Hannibal intentionally severs his hand is a possible reference to the William Shakespeare play Titus Andronicus, who voluntarily has his hand chopped off to save his son. (the character subsequently kills two men and bakes them in a pie). Anthony Hopkins played Titus in a film adaption.
