Plans for a crossover was discussed as early as 1987 by Paramount Pictures and had approached New Line Cinema about a crossover several years before the latter had gained the licensing rights to "Friday the 13th". At that time, Paramount wanted to split distributions of the movie as they would release the film for the United States while New Line would handle the International release but the reality was that Paramount wanted most of the success of Freddy due to the "Nightmare" movies making more money than their films were at the time, but New Line felt that was a unfair deal and backed out. Leading Paramount to make Venerdì 13: parte VII - Il sangue scorre di nuovo (1988) instead.
