This movie, and the novel on which it was based, parallels in part the kidnapping and murder of the son of aviator Charles A. Lindbergh. As in the actual case, the kidnapper kills the child. German-born Bruno Richard Hauptmann, a carpenter, was convicted of kidnapping and murdering twenty-month-old baby Charles Lindbergh Jr. After the "trial of the century" and many appeals, the State of New Jersey executed Hauptmann by electrocution.
