Over twenty years after the film was released, Viggo Mortensen was surprised to discover he was thanked in the credits. He had been approached by Terrence Malick for a role in the film, and the two had long conversations about the story and characters. Viggo wound up having to decline the role due to the conflict of filming A Walk on the Moon - Complice la luna (1999).
