At the end of the film, the shark bites a high-voltage cable and is electrocuted. Sharks have ampullae of Lorenzini: special sensing organs called electroreceptors, which form a network of jelly-filled pores. These ampullae allow sharks to sense electric fields in the water. Of all animals, sharks are the most sensitive to electrical fields, with a threshold of sensitivity as low as five nanovolts per centimeter (5 nV/cm) or, equivalently, five billionths (0.000000005) of a volt measured in a centimeter-long ampulla. Chief Brody hits the cable repeatedly with a paddle to get the shark's attention, but the shark is undoubtedly attracted to the cable's strong electric field.
