Since the marketing focused on the participation of Keanu Reeves, the movie was (and still is) falsely accused of being a "white savior" story, in which a Caucasian outsider character saves people of color from a dangerous threat. However, Reeves only has a supporting role in a mostly Asian ensemble cast and is, even after the re-shoots, that were supposed to expand his role, not the center of the story.
