Although the existence of a Klingon language was confirmed in Star Trek: The Trouble with Tribbles (1967), the language itself was never heard spoken aloud in the original series. The lines spoken by the Klingon captain (Mark Lenard) in the movie were actually invented by James Doohan (Commander Scott). Linguist Marc Okrand would later devise complete Klingon grammar and syntax rules along with more vocabulary words for Star Trek III - Alla ricerca di Spock (1984), and wrote a Klingon dictionary. He based most of his work on those few Klingon lines in this film to ensure consistency, making those lines, which were once gibberish, retroactively correct with regards to grammar and pronunciation.
