The making of this film was the subject of a long article written by the critic Pauline Kael for Life Magazine. She was present throughout the shooting of the movie and her article went into some detail on the pre-production, casting, filming, and post-production of the film. In her estimation, much of the preparation for the film (and the shooting as well) was rushed by director Lumet and producer Charles K. Feldman, which resulted in corners cut that impacted the finished film's effectiveness. The article is included in her collection, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang".
