The climactic battle is based on two historical fights happening near one another during the Philippines Campaign of 1944-1945. One Japanese fleet attempted to use the Surigao Strait, only to meet a series of minefields, PT-boats attacks, followed by a surface force that included the battleships; West Virginia, Maryland, Mississippi, Tennessee, California, and Pennsylvania, all of which were at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. This battle was their revenge. The second battle happened at roughly the same time off the island of Samar and included the battleship Yamato. This Japanese force of battleships, cruisers, and destroyers happened upon a small task force of destroyer-escorts, destroyers, and escort carriers called Taffy 3. Outnumbered and outgunned, Taffy 3's ships turned about and engaged the Japanese at close range, managing to fend off their enemy but at great cost, almost all of Taffy 3's ships were sunk or badly damaged. Yet, their stand warded off the mighty Yamato.
