Opa Locka Airport, where the final scenes were filmed, was used by the CIA in the 1950s and 1960s as headquarters for its covert operations in Central America and Cuba including the disastrous 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion. In October 1962 President Kennedy declared a National Emergency as a result of the Cuban Missile Crisis, and Opa Locka Airport was selected as the Peninsula Base Command for the planned invasion of Cuba.
