During the flashback sequence where David releases the Black Mutagen across the planet, there are a few shots of the local humanoid population. While they mostly resemble the Engineers from Prometheus (2012), they are more humanoid in appearance. They aren't as towering as the Engineers shown in the previous movie, their skin is not pale blue-white, their eyes are more human, and they are primitively dressed with little of the super-advanced technology seen in Prometheus. It is possible that this particular subset of Engineers have reverted back to a more primitive state and appearance over several millennia, as the Last Engineer from Prometheus had been in stasis for at least 2,000 years. Other theories are that they are of a different race of Engineers, or even a completely different humanoid race created by the Engineers, much like Humanity itself, and are much closer in appearance to the Engineers than Humanity was.
