The film is based on the Battle of Longewala ( 4-7 December 1971), part of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The battle took place within the Thar Desert in Rajasthan. An Indian company of 120 soldiers used their strong defensive position (and air support from 4 fighter aircraft) to defeat a Pakistani mobile infantry brigade (consisting of 2000 soldiers) and 40 Pakistani tanks. The Indian victory has in part been attributed to a series of Pakistani strategic errors, which left their forces vulnerable to enemy fire.
