Liv McKenzie originally had a smaller role in the film, to the point where she was simply written as Chad's Girlfriend in the script. When Sonia Ammar came aboard, the character's role was expanded. An issue with trying to expand her character was deciding on which legacy character she should be related to. McKenzie was chosen as her surname, a reference to Casey Becker's unseen neighbors in the first film.
