The film and its source novel artfully handle the delicate topic of dissociative identity disorder and childhood trauma. Dave, while clearly being the least threatening of the presented suspects in the films, proves the Sacrificial Lamb for the story. It demonstrates what psychology has recently uncovered; by failing childhood trauma survivors in their youth, society damns them to a life of being misunderstood, even feared, when that's the last thing they deserve.
