The gimmick of this film is that the five original members of the Rebels are all played by icons of the 70s blaxploitation movement which was the last major African-American film trend prior to the 90s gang pictures. Fred Williamson starred in such films as Hammer and Black Caesar; Jim Brown in Slaughter, Pam Grier in Foxy Brown and Coffy; Ron O'Neal in Super Fly; and Richard Roundtree in Shaft, among many other titles of the era.
