It was rumored and speculated that J.K. Simmons would be playing Dr. Silberman, originally played by Earl Boen in Terminator (1984), Terminator 2 - Il giorno del giudizio (1991) and Terminator 3 - Le macchine ribelli (2003). However, Dr. Silberman did not feature in the film at all; Simmons plays the older version of officer O'Brien instead.
