While reports on the riot's beginning vary and no one can confirm it for certain, it is widely believed that Marsha P Johnson (who only makes a few cameos in the film) was likely the person who threw the first brick. Much of the film's controversy comes from this choice alone - sidelining a Black transgender leader and portraying the true initiator of the riot as a white cisgender man.
