Rosamund Pike was the first choice for the role of Rita Skeeter, but she declined because she believed it was only a very small role, and would require her to return for the fifth movie as well (as the character returned in the fifth book). She later regretted not accepting the part because she would have loved to work with director Mike Newell again.
