Writer David Benioff was a huge fan of The Illiad as, when he was a child, his mother read it to him over and over again. After he completed La 25ª ora (2002), he proposed to Warner Brothers that he attempt a screenplay on it. Warners were cool on the prospect of such a project but nevertheless agreed, albeit paying Benioff a very small amount for his first draft.
