Writer James Goldman's wife was about to give birth and he wanted money for a bigger apartment to accommodate the baby, so friend Stephen Sondheim finagled a deal to create an original musical for "ABC Stage 67" and the duo rushed to complete it to ensure that Goldman could quickly get a paycheck in hand.
