Since the 70s, journalists have questioned the veracity of Frank's claims. Not until 2021 was it proven that all of the major and minor cons portrayed in this film are either false or highly embellished. The truth was revealed over the last several decades by multiple unaffiliated journalists, documentary filmmakers, FBI officials, state officials including state Governors, medical institutions, individual victims of the crimes, and more. When confronted with some of these facts, Frank has admitted to lying or embellishing the truth, though in general he avoids answering these requests for explanation. It is likely that it was much easier to get away with his lies when there was little opportunity to fact check. The internet and digitization of records changed all of that. In spite of this, Frank still stands by most of his fabrications and has often made up contradictory lies as 'explanations'.
