According to the book about special effects master Stan Winston, "The Winston Effect", when Anne Rice learned that Winston and his company would create the make-up effects for the film she was extremely pleased, as Winston's directorial debut, the tragic southern gothic horror film Pumpkinhead (1988) was one of her favorite movies. Rice has stated that the "Interview with the Vampire" novel was inspired by her grief over the death of her daughter and Pumpkinhead (1988) is about a man named Ed Harley summoning a cruel demon to murder a pack of teens who accidentally killed his young son. Perhaps, Rice identified with Harley's anguish.
