A single fire hydrant still worked in San Francisco after the earthquake. It was located at 20th and Church Streets near present-day Dolores Park and is credited with saving homes in the surrounding blocks. It is now painted gold, and still actively pumps water if needed. Each April 18th, it is celebrated during an earthquake memorial and ceremoniously given a new coat of paint.
