Crucifixion was a prolonged and brutal death, in which the position of the arms along the cross-piece made breathing difficult. The crucified victim would push up with his legs to relieve the strain on his arms, then when he became exhausted, he would collapse again and his breathing would once again become difficult. This is why many depictions of crucifixion show the victims with bent legs, having collapsed. At the start of the movie you can see a painting of the Crucifixion in which a soldier has used the spear, but there is also a man holding a long stick with a round end - this was used to break the victims legs so that they could no longer push upwards, and so expired.
