Several members of the cast and crew were actual military veterans, most of whom served in World War II: Karl Malden served in the United States Army Air Forces, while Jerome Courtland, Steve Forrest, Bert Freed and Gordon Jones were in the regular Army. Carleton Carpenter and Robert Arthur served in the Navy during the War, while director Richard Brooks and writer Millard Kaufman were in the Marine Corps. Richard Widmark tried to enlist during WWII but was ineligible for military service due to a perforated eardrum. Technical advisor Walter K. Sims and military advisor John Synowsky also served in the Army.
