Before "Grease", the last big period musicals on Broadway and in Hollywood were Cantando sotto la pioggia (1952), a movie about the twenties; Vecchia America (1951), Il violinista sul tetto (1971), and I fidanzati sconosciuti (1949), which were about the turn of the century. There was also Cabaret (1972), which was about the thirties. There was Millie (1967), which was about the twenties. There was Il boy friend (1971), which was about the twenties. There was Tutti insieme appassionatamente (1965), which was about the forties. The last big era to be memorialized in musicals and nostalgia pieces, before the fifties, was the twenties.
