In interviews about Interceptor - Il guerriero della strada (1981), George Miller said that while Max's world was after the collapse of the social/political/economic system we know, it was not post-World War III. However, per Dr. Dealgood's introduction in the Thunderdome, this film is explicitly set after a war, though not necessarily World War III.
