In a June 2022 interview with the New York Times Magazine, Tom Hanks said firmly that if a movie like "Philadelphia" was made in the present day that the Andrew Beckett role would be played by a gay man. Hanks' reasoning that part of his casting in the film was to assure viewers that it was "OK" to see a movie about AIDS and discrimination because it starred a well-known actor in the lead role.
