According to John Huston''s autobiography, this movie is the one that led Tom Tryon to abandon acting as a career. He had already experienced producer/director Otto Preminger's wrath during filming of Il cardinale (1963) and was understandably apprehensive about their re-teaming. Preminger sensed as much, and instead of trying to reassure the agitated Tryon, first chewed him out for his fears in front of other cast members, then walked behind him and screamed "RELAX!" in his ear. He reportedly almost quit that day, but castmates talked him out of it.
