The 'talking' sounds of Bubo the mechanical owl were inspired by the British children's TV show The Clangers (1969). Ray Harryhausen was a big fan of the show and its animators, Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin, so he used the same sounds as a nod to them and their style. Maggie Smith also appeared alongside Postgate's cousin Angela Lansbury in Assassinio sul Nilo (1978).
