To contrast the lead female characters, Scarlett Johansson (Kay Lake) and Hilary Swank (Madeline Linscott) are defined by wardrobe style and color, and to a lesser extent the interior of their homes. Kay, in addition to being blonde, is almost always dressed in light colors (white, cream, beige, soft gray, etc) and her apartment is decorated mostly in those same light tones. Madeline has black hair, is frequently dressed in dark colors - black, burgundy, etc, and some of the rooms in her family's mansion have something of a dark gothic look to them. Mia Kirshner (Elizabeth Short) in her first screen test, is wearing a light blouse but in the next two, she is wearing black. The first screen test demonstrates her innocence, naivety, and dreams; the others represent her sadness, fear, and disillusionment.
