The handgun Chris brings on the adventure is a Colt M1911-A1, which he calls simply a ".45." According to the novella, he had nine bullets in total in the stolen box of shells; in the movie, the number of bullets available to the boys is not specified. When not being fired in the movie, the gun appears to have been replaced with a replica "safety" model, discernible by the presence of an external extractor rod under the barrel, but it is clearly a 1911 replica.
