In the original short story, when Helene convinces Andre to go back again through the teleporter without the fly with his head and arm, not only does it completely fail to return him to his human form, it also infuses into his body some of the atoms from their pet cat that was earlier teleported, but never re-integrated. At this point, Andre realizes that it is absolutely pointless to keep looking for the fly.
