The film was made independently, on a budget of just $60,000. Elia Kazan was losing interest in directing by then, having made only one other film in the previous nine years, the very expensive "The Arrangement", which had been a major critical and financial failure. Kazan liked to say that "The Visitors" was made, in its entirety, for one-tenth of the salary paid just to one actor, Faye Dunaway, in "The Arrangement". This did not lead to the film's becoming a commercial success, however. Kazan made only one more film.
