One of the reasons why a low budget film like this has such an extraordinary soundtrack is that David Bowie was a huge fan of the novel and of Danny Boyle's previous film, Piccoli omicidi tra amici (1994). As co-writer of Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life", Bowie set up a special step deal for music rights that opened the gates for the production to use songs that they would not normally have been able to afford.
