In honor of the film's opening, Los Angeles mayor Tom Bradley proclaimed 11th September 1981 to be "Lunch Wagon Day." Opening day ceremonies including a parade of approximately eighty real lunch wagons down Hollywood Boulevard. A nine minute video of the proceedings entitled "Lunch Wagon: The Lost Tape" is available to watch on the internet.
