Originally intended to be shot in colour, the producers changed their mind when they were offered some excess monochrome film stock at a significantly reduced rate by the suppliers. With a tight budget, even by 'Carry On...' standards, they jumped at the chance and even asked for some scenes to be written to pay homage to the film noir genre of the 1940s.
