Ironically part of this story became part of western culture and tradition; and indeed; part of this movie; due to a mistake. Cinderella, in the earliest incantations and iterations of this tale; never had glass slippers. She had fur slippers. Squirrel fur slippers, to be exact. Charles Perrault, the famous scribe whose adaptation of Cinderella was the basis for this Disney's version of Cinderella, and who told the most famous version of this story that most of us read, had spent years going over ancient versions of this tale; which all talked about "vair" shoes. Vair is an antiquated French word meaning animal or squirrel. Going along with all the animal transformations in the story, originally the Fairy Godmother, in addition to changing the mice into horses, and changing Cinderella's hound into a coach rider; changed squirrels from Cinderella's garden into shoes for Cinderella to wear. Reading these old passages describing these events in the story; Perrault came across the word "vair"; a very old word which had vanished from common usage at this point. Perrault read this old word he didn't recognize, and mistook it for "verre", a French word for glass. Hence, in this Disney version of the story; and in nearly every version of this story in existence now; Cinderella has glass slippers; due to this mistranslation. Even though we all know glass slippers are not really a thing. They aren't now and they certainly weren't in feudal France where this is supposed to take place.
