After Ann Miller turned down the role of Joan Collins' mother - the 78 year-old Miller being unwilling to play mother-daughter with 68 year old Collins - the role was accepted by June Allyson. Despite having played Collins' romantic rival in Sesso debole? (1956) - Collins' only showcase which might be termed a musical (which also co-starred Ann Miller) - Allyson was sixteen years Collins' senior and their mother-daughter casting was not that farfetched. However while Allyson was seemingly fine with playing an old broad's mother, she abandoned the role - at the last minute, according to Carrie Fisher - upon realizing she'd be presented as distinctly unglamorous in contrast to the three headliners. Allyson did however make an unbilled cameo, ''These Old Broads'' reuniting her with Collins and in a sense with Elizabeth Taylor - sister Amy to Allyson's Jo in Piccole donne (1949) - although Allyson and Taylor had no scenes together in ''These Old Broads''.
