Burkittsville, Maryland, where the film's plot takes place, was the site of a battle in the American Civil War. The Battle of Burkittsville/Battle of Crampton's Gap (1862) featured a small, hastily assembled Confederate force defending the area against the VI Corps of the Union Army, in order to protect the rear of Confederate Major General Lafayette McLaws. The Confederates eventually lost the battle, but successfully delayed Union forces and prevented any attack on McLaws' forces.
