On multiple occasions, Doctor Strange corrects people who call him Mister. Had the character been English the opposite would in fact be true. Surgeons in the UK go by Mister instead of Doctor. This tradition dates back many years. Physicians went to university whilst Surgeons were barbers. So, a doctor of medicine had a degree and was titled Dr. But surgeons had no formal education and were titled Mr., and after becoming a qualified surgeon an individual will go from Doctor to Mister/Miss/Missus but with the letters MRCS or FRCS after their name. Many surgeons take offense at being called doctor and doctors take offence at being referred to as Miss/Mrs/Mr. This is actually true of all Surgical Specialists and unthinkable for anyone not part of a surgical based speciality. Consultants/GPs being a specialist doctor/surgeon no longer in post graduate training.
